no, its not smart to. 9 times out of 10 they will eat there babies. When I worked at petsmart, we would divide the cage with a glass "divider" plastic can be chewed through. The mother was only placed with the babies when it was time to "feed" and someone was there watching the entire time.

A mother hamster has multiple teats on her underbelly. The baby hamsters will latch on to these teats and feed on the mother's milk. After a few weeks the babies will start to eat regular hamster food.
