In some form or another, animal shelters have been around since the beginning of time. Man has always cared for animals, and helped those in need.
The first actual humane society was created by Henry Bergh in April 1866 when he founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Based on the latter, animal shelters have been around for the past 145 years

That depends on the shelter they go to. Many shelters now have a no euthanasia policy so the animal will be adopted out no matter how long it takes. Other shelters are so over crowded they set a time limit on the number of days an animal may stay at the facility.
Rabbits have been recorded throughout history in stories and fables so their is belief rabbits have been around as long as man has walked the earth. The rabbit was considered to be in the animal family with rodents until 1912. Historical records speaking of rodents could actually be speaking of the rabbit.

Homo erectus shelters were likely meant to be long lasting rather than easy to move. They would have constructed shelters using materials like wood, grass, and animal hides to provide protection from the elements and predators. The effort put into building these shelters implies a focus on durability and stability rather than mobility.

Many animal shelters do not have a set time limit for holding an animal. But the shelter's available space, the health of the animal, and it's temperament would all be considered as factors that would lead to an animal being destroyed. The Humane Society of the USA recommends that shelters hold stray animals for a minimum of 5 operating days.
Many scientists believe that Tasmanian devils have been around for over 3,000 years. The Tasmanian devil is an animal that is found in the wild in Australia.
There are sadly tons and tons of shelters that humanely euthanize (Usually it is an injection into a vein) animals after a certain length of stay. There are so many animals that are going into shelters than there are being adopted. However there are also no kill shelters that will keep an animal as long as it takes to find it a home. If you have to bring an animal to a shelter please find out if it is a no kill shelter if it is find somewhere else that isn't.
