What are common cat disases that a cat can get?

Some well-known diseases in cats are Feline enteritis (Panleucopaenia), Cat flu, Feline leukemia virus and Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Domestic cats should be vaccinated against the first three. The risk of FIV infection can be reduced by neutering, as this reduces fighting behaviours- FIV is transmitted by bodily fluids such as blood and saliva, mainly through bites.

If your cat has FIV Can you catch it?

FIV in cats is Feline Immunodeficiancy Virus. It's similar to HIV in humans but it's important to note that FIV is NOT transmissable to humans! It can, however, be transmitted to other cats via bites. From the site www.animalhealthchannel.com/fiv"Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes an infectious disease in domestic cats and cheetahs similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection) in humans. It attacks and weakens the body's immune system, making the animal susceptible to infections and diseases that don't usually affect healthy cats. There is no cure for FIV, and the use of vaccines to prevent infection is somewhat controversial.FIV is a lentivirus, a virus that causes slowly developing disease. Though eventually fatal, an FIV-positive cat can live for many years without any signs of illness.PrevalenceFIV occurs worldwide and its prevalence varies geographically. About 1.5% to 3% of cats in the United States are infected with FIV. About 5% of FIV-positive cats also have feline leukemia virus (FeLV)."

Can cats get AIDS?

Cats can't "catch" AIDS from a human being.Humans can suffer from HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus but a cat can only suffer from the feline version, which is called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (or FIV).How sad!Believe it or not, cats can contract FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) which is a feline version of the AIDS virus. FIV is part of the same family of viruses as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Just like the human variety, FIV attacks the cat's immune system; weakening it and leaving the cat prone to a variety of illnesses and infections.FIV is most often found in blood, saliva and other fluids. The most common means of transmission is through bite wounds. FIV, like HIV, can also be transmitted via sexual activity, and the infected mother can pass it onto her kittens. While there is no cure, a cat can live many years in relative comfort with the right care and proper treatments.

Does a cat with FIV infect another cat?

Only through deep bite or scratch wounds where the saliva of the cat who is infected enters the other cat's bloodstream, or from pregnant cats to their offspring.

How risky is it to house a cat infected with HIV with non-infected cats?

Cats actually do not become infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus); they have their own related virus called FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Your cat cannot infect you with FIV, so you are not at risk for any disease. The short answer is, you will end up with a full house of FIV-positive cats - the virus is fairly contagious among cats that are commingled. However, if you keep all the cats indoors and don't bring new cats in, the cats you have can live a relatively normal life. Once your last FIV-positive cat passes away, you should thoroughly clean your house before bringing in any new cats to ensure the virus is gone.

Can you get aids from a cat?

No. FIV and HIV are truly like apples and oranges. While both are fruits, they can only grow on a specific tree.I had an FIV positive cat for 6 years until his immune system could no longer keep up. There is no danger of infection to you; however it is imperative that you keep the cat isolated from other cats at all times, which usually means keeping them indoors. He/she will be highly susceptable to infection, and will require extra cleaning care. Otherwise they are just as wonderful and safe to keep as any other cat.

Which animals are affected by FIV?

FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, affects cats worldwide. FIV can affect much larger breeds or species of cats such as the African lions. Currently, there is a vaccine for FIV; however, some cats have tested positive for FIV after being vaccinated.

How does toxoplasmosis figure in with the death of an older cat?

Unless your cat had a dysfunctional immune system (such as co-infection with FeLV or FIV), toxoplasmosis likely had nothing to do with your cat's death. Most cats carry Toxoplasma organisms all their life and have no ill effects with it.

Can lions who eat a person with AIDS get AIDS?

They shouldn't be able to: AIDS is caused by HIV, or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Domesticated house cats are susceptible to FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). FIV can only be spread between other cats who carry it, humans are immune to FIV.

I have a Female cat and there are a lot of stray male cats but my cat never leaves the front yard will she call male cats and get pregnant?

If your cat hasn't been spayed and is let outside (or manages to escape) while in season it is almost guaranteed that your cat will come back home pregnant. There is a good chance that none of these stray males have not been neutered and could be carrying all sorts of infections such as Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or FIV (feline version of HIV). Unfortunately such viruses such as FIV can easily be contracted via sexual activity, much like humans contract HIV. If you believe your cat has escaped outside while on heat it is highly advisable to take your cat to the vet immediately in order to be tested for such infections and any signs of pregnancy.
