How many legs (on) a red back spider? if this is the question... 8 (eight) legs less if they have been crushed or ripped off
The common black house spider eats redback spiders. This probably explains why redbacks are uncommon inside the house. Both redbacks and black house spiders are shy (especially the redback). A house spider will get to recognize you if you feed it ;)
Redback spiders primarily move by walking using their eight legs. They are not known to swim, as they are terrestrial arachnids that live in dry habitats. When moving on water or smooth surfaces, they may use a combination of their legs and silk threads for traction.
It sounds like you have found a redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) which is native to Australia. Redback spiders are venomous, and the females can be recognized by their distinctive red stripe on the upper side of their abdomen. If you come across one, it's best to keep a safe distance and avoid handling them.
