A general rule of thumb is to have at least 1 square foot of floor space per bird for broilers and add 0.5 to 1.0 more for older birds. That's rather cramped spacing, minimal spacing. If you want to give your chickens a quality life, please consider 4 square feet per chicken inside the coop and 8 sq ft outside in the chicken run. For bantams, 2 sq feet inside and 6 sq ft outside.

You only need one. A good mature rooster over 12 months old can easily fertilize up to 15 hens. Roosters do not need to mate with a hen daily but they will. Once a hen has been mounted, the deposited sperm sac will supply enough material for up to 10 days worth of fertile eggs.

The rule of thumb is a minimum of one square foot of floor space per bird. More would be better in the case of laying hens.
