There have only been 3 shark attacks in Hilton Head. From a total of 43 shark attacks over the past 80 years. The first recorded shark attack was in the 188s and that was the only fatal one which occurred in deep waters. There have been no recorded shark attacks in Hilton Head in years! Although there are many sharks there you will be safe. The only ones that come close to shore are small and harmless and rare. Never swim at night or in the early morning or evening. Try to avoid swimming near fishermen. Also be aware of any cuts you have or if your on your period... Sharks can smell blood from miles away. And lastly don't wear anything reflective like jewelry or sequins. Other than that there is a very very very very rare chance of a shark attack to occur.

The Matawan Maneater, was a great white shark which during the summer of 1916, attacked numerous people, killing several. The attacks occurred along the length of the New Jersey shoreline, prompting a shark hunt. The shark believed to be responsible for the attacks was caught and killed, near Matawan New Jersey where the final shark attacks took place. On autopsy, human remains were found within the shark, though none of the remains corresponded to the victims of the attacks, leading many to speculate there was more than one shark involved, though the shark attacks ceased after the one shark was caught.
