They range from $5-$30 as far as I see.
Well, of course it has alot to do with personal opinion, but I prefer guinea pigs over gerbils, especially as pets to smaller children because guinea pigs are personable and friendly and need attention, and they are also large enough to cuddle, whereas gerbils are smaller and harder for kids to hug, and also not as friendly - they don't need attention as much and in my opinion aren't the best pets if you're looking for a pet that can also be your friend. I had guinea pigs for 5 1/2 years and enjoyed every minute of it! Guinea Pigs also live longer than gerbils.
If you buy from a small breeder, or just a pet owner that has baby (or adult guinea pigs they don't want anymore) guinea pigs, you can get them for $10, but if you buy from a pet store they are $40-$60. And that is just for the animal, then you have to buy all the supplies.
Guinea pigs have been around for thousands of years! Pet guinea pigs have been dated back to the 17th Centry even! Seems like ancient humans liked guinea pigs too!
I feed my guinea pigs normal guinea pig food from the pet store, but for a little variety i give them letups, carrots and apples for a treat.
Buying guinea pigs isn't recommended because you don't know their age, their parents, the conditions they're raised in, and if you're looking for a certain breed, it can't be guaranteed that the guinea pigs are purebred. Sometimes they have fleas as well. They're often not fed correctly. A lot of the time they have malnutrition or vitamin c deficiency if they're fed rabbit food with no hay or veggies. Pet store guinea pigs are rarely tame and usually very skittish. I got my guinea pig from a pet store but I've had guinea pigs before. Shortly after I got him I noticed him biting and scratching his back so I looked through his fur and found a big scab. I have no idea how it happened but he definitely had it when I got him. You might have better luck getting a guinea pig from a shelter if there's any available but if you get one from a pet store make sure it's happy and healthy.
