I have always allowed my dogs to self feed and have never had any problems with it. I put their dry dog food in a bowl on the floor next to their water dish. They eat whenever they're hungry. They usually eat the bowl of food by nibbling a little here or there and then eating the rest all at once after the family has had dinner. I refill the bowl whenever it's low, but they don't seem to care about it unless they're hungry. It can sit on the floor full for hours before they decide to take a nibble and then they'll eat a little and later they'll finish it. I prefer this method because they are not always begging and they are not gluttons like some dogs. They know that it's always there for them when they want it. My aunt feeds her poodle and bichon the same way. My dogs are 1) a purebred yellow lab AKC registered and 2) a mixed-breed mutt from the shelter. Good luck.

A miniature schnauzer needs plenty of grooming so a daily brush is important, especially with the beard and eyebrows. Make sure you brush all the knots out of its fur to prevent tangles emurging. You will need to see a groomer every three months to keep your schnauzer in good condition. Schnauzers need about 45 minutes exersise per day but possibly will let you off with a shorter walk each day or a missed day if you need to. I would suggest about 30 minutes exersise per day at least because schnauzers are very energetic dogs and need a way to let out their excess energy.
