horses are fairly expensive to keep, there is no definitive answer to this question as it differs. main things that you will need to pay out for will be:

  • feed, depending on the breed and size of the horse it can cost anywhere between £10 per week to £40.
  • stabling/field rent, this can be quite expensive, higher quality will cost more than bog standard, and DIY livery costs less than full livery, you need to think about if you will need to pay someone else to look after the horse. this can range from about £8 per week to £100.
  • insurance, depending on level of cover this should cost about £5 a week.
  • tack, this is very expensive, you want your tack to fit so having a saddler fit it is essential, this should cost around £800 total.
  • other expenses such as treats, tools, replacements, headcollars, leadropes, buckets, rugs, grooming kit, leather care items, first aid kit, vet/dentist/farrier fees all come to a grand total of about £1000 per year
  • bedding, is important if you wish for your horse to live in a stable, it needs to be changed daily, this varies between products so id say this should cost about £5-£10 per week.

this isn't an all inclusive cost as there are many other things to take into consideration such as travel costs if you wish to compete, and the price of the horse itself but roughly, per week a horse can cost up to £200 per week.

horses are a very expensive member of the family.

Well it depends........

Do you have land to keep a horse on?

If not how much is it to keep a horse at a livery yard/riding centre?

How much is the feed you would use?

How much is the visit from the farrier?

Do you have enough money for vets bills?

All the conditioners and stuff to wash your horse would you have enough for that?

There is lots more things to think about.

Plus you might need new tack suddenley and tack isn't cheap!

What about emergency vets bills say if your horse got injured.........

Or what if your horse needed an operation or something like that you would probaly have to pay.

Owning a horse is something everyone would love but it is expensive very expensive.

Say you couldn't afford something it is not fair to dump the cost on your parents/family.

If you are serious about owning a horse discuss it with your parents and ring up stables, horsefeeds, tackshops and vets and all the other places and compare prices.

When all that is finished with discuss with your parents how much you are willing to pay a week and if you can afford it and maybe youll get one.

If the answer is no and you've disscused it all your parents are being serious.

Make sure you do have enough because it is not fair if you've really started to bond with your horse and you suddenley have to sell it.

Remember:Farriers only come about every 6 to 8 weeks.

Sorry if this answer sort of turned in to how to convince your parents to get you a horse.

I hope it was helpful oh I wasn't trying to put you of getting one I was just explaining everything.

well, a good horse is at least around £2,500 unless the seller needs the horse gone asap and lowers the price, but its not buying the horse that costs a lot, its the stabling. Depending on which stable you go to, the cost to keep a horse at a stable-yard is around roughly £200-£500 a month, which is probably including feed, stabling, fields, use of equipment and use of facilities.

What is cloudy eye in horses?

There could be several reasons why a horse's eye looks cloudy, such as moonblindness. This is probably not something you can deal with on your own. You need to have your vet look at it, the sooner the better.

Do you need your own horse for horse riding lessons?

It depends where you ride. If you are having lessons at your house then yes you will probably need your own horse. But if you are going to a riding centre then usually you will not need a horse of your own.

How much does a thoroughbred eat?

The amount of concentrate a horse requires has generally got nothing to do with its breed (although obviously a Thoroughbred will need more than a Shetland pony.) Provided that there is sufficient forage, a horse that is left to its own devices and not ridden or worked does not need concentrates unless the forage is of poor quality. The amount of concentrates will increase proportionate to the amount of work it does. A Thoroughbred racehorse or eventing horse in full work and training will need a lot of concentrate to fuel those massive muscles. I'll look up a forage/concentrate ratio and post it here later.
