Lipizzaners are considered to be a rare breed of horse. Less than 2,500 exist in the world today. Approximately 1,400 of those are located in North America, with the rest residing in Hungary, Slovenia, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Italy. There is also a thriving population in South Africa. Of course, a few other countries have Lipizzan populations as well, but the preceding countries have the greatest population.

In summary, the Lipizzaner is not known as a "popular" breed in terms of total numbers of horses.
