If humans had wings could they fly?

Wow, yes, people will grow wings and already have. Like me for example. I've got wings. They are brown on top and white on bottom, with little speckles on them. People will be able to have them surgically grafted on by 2013-2014. So, just wait and see. Maybe you will be like me and Audrey!

Answer: Humans cannot grow wings. And we cannot have wings surgically attached to our bodies. There are several reasons why.

1.Humans are just too big! The wing size required for a human to fly would be larger than a hanglider, and have a surface area of at least 20 feet.

2.Flight requires more than just wings. Humans do not have the bones, or the lungs for flight. They also do not have the pectoral muscles to power a pair of wings.

3.IF you found a big enough wing, and somehow change the person's lungs and bones, you still could not surgically attatch it. The wings would have to be attached near your center of gravity to allow for flight, that would be your waist or midsection. And there are no bones there to attatch wings to. The wings would also have to be attached by the muscles, the nerve endings, veins for blood flow, etc. and even if all went according to plan...since we do not share blood type, or even some DNA with birds, the wings would be rejected.

However it is technically possible for a human to mutate and over multiple generations grow wings

It's mainly about strength-to-weight ratio. When living things get bigger, they get heavier faster than they get stronger. A muscle that's twice as strong is four times as heavy, and will need four times the blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to be as effective as the smaller muscle.

Something human-sized that's built as a human just can't get the required strength-to-weight ratio - even if we would make us some really slick wings.
