Sorry for the stupid answer above, and trust me, it wasn't me. Your title amuses me a little bit because it says "if you make your own dog", and honey, you can't make your own dog. Maybe out of paper mache, but not an actual living, breathing, crapping, smelly dog that pisses on the carpet and eats out of the trash. If you already have a dog and you want to get it to listen to you, that's a different question all together, because there are many types of training. House training, leash training, ect. Please be more specific next time and you might get a better response.

to train a dog to listen to you, you must: a) make up a signal( for ex. if I was training my West highland white terrier to sit i would, make a certain signal like flip my palm down and keep hitting it down each time i want him/her to sit) then they will get used to the signal you make if you want them to sit. b) NEVER CALL YOUR DOG"S NAME IF YOU WANT TO TRAIN IT TO COME!! why? because in the dog's mind the only thing that its hearing is its name being rewinded again and again.
