Sorry for the stupid answer above, and trust me, it wasn't me. Your title amuses me a little bit because it says "if you make your own dog", and honey, you can't make your own dog. Maybe out of paper mache, but not an actual living, breathing, crapping, smelly dog that pisses on the carpet and eats out of the trash. If you already have a dog and you want to get it to listen to you, that's a different question all together, because there are many types of training. House training, leash training, ect.
