It causes hairballs in the cat's digestive tract, and the cat may hack them up again, making an awful sound as if choking. I have heard that butter will help with this problem, although some vets may not recommend it for health reasons. I have also heard that smearing petroleum jelly on one of the cat's paws occasionally will help with the swallowed hair, but I think the cat would really prefer butter, as the petroleum jelly does not taste very good. Special cat food and medicine are available if your cat has a serious problem with swallowed hair.
