It depends on your point of view. Animal rights followers think it's cruel - HOWEVER - in their natural environment, snakes do NOT consume carrion. They only eat what they have killed themselves. Compare the death of a rat killed by a snake - with the death of a rabbit targeted by a fox...

The snake strikes at the rodent, instantaneously 'wrapping' the rat in its coils. As the rat breathes out, the snake tightens its grip - and the process is repeated until the rat is dead. The whole process takes less than 10 seconds - and the rat certainly has no idea what's happened ! Now - the rabbit being hunted by the fox - is chased over a longer period of time (often for many miles). The fox simply runs the rabbit until it collapses from exhaustion (the rabbit runs out of fear for its life). Once caught, the fox rips the rabbit apart (sometimes the rabbit is still alive).

Symbiotic relationship between banded sea snake and the harlequin snake eel?

The banded sea snake and the harlequin snake eel have a commensalistic relationship, where the snake eel benefits by following the sea snake to feed on the prey disturbed by its movements without providing any benefit in return. The sea snake is not affected by the presence of the eel.

What do you feed a pet gardener snake?

This can be dependant on which species of Garter Snake you are talking about but I would recommend offering earthwoms, crickets, and pinky mice to see which your snake prefers. Feed the snake once a week or so and provide some hiding areas, a water dish, and an undertank heat-pad (avoid heat rocks as most can leave burns on your reptiles) and you should be set to take care of your garter snake for years to come.

Is it cruel to feed a live rabbit to a snake?

This is a 'two-sided coin'.... Having kept reptiles since 1986, I've had many snakes that feed entirely on defrosted rodents - and some that have only been interested in taking live food. If the snake was in its natural habitat - fending for itself.. it would ONLY take live food - killing it itself before consumption. In captivity - most snakes can be 'conditioned' to take dead prey. From a personal point of view - having witnessed the speed at which a snake 'despatches' its prey - I believe the food animal has no concept of what's happening to it. It only becomes 'cruel' if the snake takes more than a couple of seconds to despatch the prey. That said - reptiles are popular 'pets' these days - and there are plenty of retailers selling frozen food for their consumption.

When snakes eat prey does the prey die instantly?

in the UK it is illegal to feed snakes live prey but people do !! if you have a larger snake and do feed it live prey some will constrict until the prey is dead but other will eat it alive and it will still be chirping or making a noise as it passes down the snakes body until it suffocates !you can view snakes eating live prey (rabbits ,birds ,chickens) on youtube

What to feed a baby snake that has no teeth?

Depends what species of snake. It doesn't matter that it has no teeth, snakes don't need them, they swallow their prey whole. Go to a reptile specialist's shop and ask them, live or dead crickets and mice would be good.

How do you feed a snake?

It depends.. everyone has different ways of feeding their snakes. A lot of people feed them right inside their cages, but this can cause them to swallow something that isn't their foot, which can lead to problems.. and sometimes even death. Another way to feed them is to take the snake out of its cage and put it into another box type of thing.. (I put mine in an old shoebox or plastic box) That way it won't swallow anything else.. You can use live prey, or frozen and then thawed prey. If you use live prey you have to be sure that it is small enough to not hurt the snake. If you use thawed prey, twice the girth of the snake is about the *biggest* you should go. (Others have different opinions) And of course, the size of the snake always matters. You can use tweezer type things you can buy at a petstore specifically for feeding snakes. (That way the snake doesn't 'miss' the mouse/rat and get your finger) People use a huge variety of prey. These include: chicks, rats, mice, rabbits, some birds, and for some pretty rare snakes, eggs.

How often does a snake catch its prey daily nightly weekly?

Snakes usually feed about every one to two weeks. They swallow their prey whole.

Can a mice eat a snake?

It's possible for mice to injure snacks, and that might include nibbling away at them. There's been many cases of irresponsible keepers giving a small snake too large of a mouse and the mouse injuring the snake as a result. That's why dead rodents are much safer to feed to snakes. If the snake is finicky and refuses to eat pre-dead food (which does happen) then they should be supervised during feedings and small prey should be given. When using live feed, many snake keepers prefer to knock the feed animal unconscious before putting it into the enclosure.

What does grass snake feed on?

Almost entirely on amphibians such as toads and frogs. Instead of constricting - they just 'grab and swallow' their prey.
