Are you sure? Some peafowl hide their eggs.
A little dog food once in a while will not hurt the laying hens, however do not substitute dog food for a balanced layer feed. The layer feed has been formulated to be nutritionally complete and meet the needs of a laying bird with the correct protein, fat and calcium numbers. A full diet of dogfood will cause problems down the line health wise and especially egg wise since it is not formulated for hens.
all i know is that they havent been seen since 1950
Keep hen on her nestWe had this problem once. We had a nest full of fertilized eggs and the hen wouldn't stay on the nest b/c she was being distracted by the handsome roo. She would sit there unless he came prancing by, then up she would get...so we locked her in her box for the full 21 days with food and water ofcourse, and enough room to walk around, this did the trick!! We got 8 babies out of it. Since then we havent had to "lock" her up. I think where it was her first "batch" she wasn't sure what to do. Now she goes to the nest after laying about 10-13 eggs and hatches on her own. :)
Most spider moms die when their eggs hatch, since the little spiders that were in the eggs devour the spider mom until she dies.
If there are eggs still in the nest that she's sitting on and they havent hatched, they may be unfertilized. A dove will sit on eggs regardless if they are fertilized. Might just like the area:)
