The "white" breeds of swine in the United States are the Yorkshire, Chester White, an Landrace. They are referred to as the "white" breeds not just for the obvious color of them but for characteristics. These three white breeds tend to be much more productive and durable in different environments. They are the base of most breeding programs where producing a large amount of pork is desired. They are often cross-bred with the "meat" breeds which are the Hampshire, Duroc, and Berkshire. They are not as durable, meaning they tend to have leg and foot soundness problems but when crossed with the "white" breeds they make a good combination. Litter sizes are often much larger in the white breeds, and they are a choice when building up a herd quickly is desired, and they are helpful to the farmer's profitability.
The main breeds used in meat production are cross breeds between New Hampshire, Black Australorp, White Rock, Light Sussex and Indian Game. The White Leghorn, although a smaller bird, was used to introduce the dominant white feathering gene which is the preferred color.
