This is not usually done to adult birds. Chicks are often de-beaked right after hatch at some major hatcheries but this is to prevent injury to other birds. It is generally accepted now that de-beaking after the first week causes unnecessary pain and suffering to the birds when other remedial action is available to stop feather pecking and cannibalism. Proper housing and light control stops all but 1% of injurious behavior in a well maintained flock. Problem birds are best culled rather than subject the entire flock to unneeded de-beaking.
