You should be aiming for between 8 and 12 hours. about the same time as the sun is up. this helps with the natural environment of the tank, the plants will grow nicely, there wont be loads of algae everywhere, and your fish will behave more naturally.
this can obviously be adjusted to suit when you will be looking at the tank, after all your paying for it :P. I have mine on around 11am-9pm because this is when im most likely to be home!
too light can lead to an algae bloom and make your tank go green, if this happens don't leave your tank on for so long. it might also help to keep natural sun light off of the tank.

∙ 14y agoFish need both light and dark cycles just like people do. The light should be on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours each day. The easiest way to do this is to place the aquarium light on a timer.
