From what I see posted on the internet, they are not one of the smartest. I have owned several of them and many other breeds of dogs that are listed as smarter. I have found through personal experience that an Australian Shepherd is smarter than any dog EXCEPT a border collie. Don't know why I feel this way, but they seem more responsive than Australian Shepherds. However, Australian Shepherds seem to have more of a personality, which I prefer.

Australian shepherds are versatile dogs that can adapt to various habitats, but they thrive in environments where they have space to run and be active. They typically do well in homes with large yards or access to open spaces where they can exercise and use their herding instincts. They also appreciate human companionship and do best in environments where they can be socialized and engaged with regularly.
First are the Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Dobermans, Shetland Sheepdogs, Labradors, Papillions, Rottweilers and Australian Cattle Dogs (also known as Blue Heelers) are recognized as some of the most intelligent pure breeds. I LOVE ALL THE DOGS ABOVE <3 However, the most intelligent dogs I've met personally were all rescued mixed breeds (mutts).
The gestation period for Australian shepherds is typically around 63 days, which is the same for most medium to large dog breeds. It is important to monitor the pregnant dog closely during this time and prepare for the arrival of the puppies.
