The 'best' breed typically depends on a person's lifestyle, and there are pros and cons to every breed. But as a happy Labradoodle owner I can tell you what they are for Labradoodles. Yes, not all dogs are the same and the Labradoodle breed is not yet standardized much, especially in the US, so there may be dog to dog differences.
Pros:
High trainability
Sociable
Typically non aggressive
CURLY variety has non allergenic HAIR (people may still be allergic to dandruff and the wavy variety is semi non allergenic, and the curly variety is being bred out)
Playful nature
Cons:
Coat takes a lot of work in many dogs
Not standardized and dogs can vary in personality and appearance more than other breeds (more standardized in Australia though)
May be overly playful/excited depending on the dog
The puppies resulting from a Labrador / Poodle mating, are known as Labradoodles. Some have become excellent guide dogs for blind people.
