well some breeds were used for emergencey services like the dalmation was help with the fire engines and German shepards are used in police investagations but often a springer spaneil or a labrador are used as sniffer dogs to snif out drugs things like that. but of course house dogs like they say are a mans best friend and are very friendly. they are useful like the labadores are guide dogs and dogs are very good for exersise because they need 2 walks a day but i have a dog myself and basically they are a joy to have.

Depends on what you mean by that. Do you mean what is a dog meant to do for it's owner? Well for the most part dogs are just meant to be companions. The quote "Man's best friend" Comes to mind. Dogs can be great friends. Unlike people, they offer unlimited compassion without judging you. Your best human friend might be disgusted with you if you should up to her party in a tee shirt and sweet pants. However a dog doesn't care. He just wants to be pet.

Though dogs can do many other things including (But not limited to) Guarding (Though I don't personally believe in training a dog to do this) Doing therapy work to cheer up people in hospitals and helping kids learn to read in schools, ect, and being of service to disabled people in public such as leading the blind, alerting to panic attacks, ect.
