Depends on what you mean by that. Do you mean what is a dog meant to do for it's owner? Well for the most part dogs are just meant to be companions. The quote "Man's best friend" Comes to mind. Dogs can be great friends. Unlike people, they offer unlimited compassion without judging you. Your best human friend might be disgusted with you if you should up to her party in a tee shirt and sweet pants. However a dog doesn't care. He just wants to be pet.
Though dogs can do many other things including (But not limited to) Guarding (Though I don't personally believe in training a dog to do this) Doing therapy work to cheer up people in hospitals and helping kids learn to read in schools, ect, and being of service to disabled people in public such as leading the blind, alerting to panic attacks, ect.

Dogs have been selectively bred for various purposes such as hunting, herding, guarding, and companionship. This selective breeding has resulted in dogs with specific physical and behavioral traits that make them well-suited for different tasks or environments. Additionally, selective breeding is done to maintain or enhance certain desirable characteristics and to reduce the risk of genetic diseases.
