Cowboy style horse riding is considered Western riding there are several different events for a western rider...trail, endurance, rifle endurance, pleasure, equitation, rodeo, gymkana, reining, ropeing, barrel, etc....
Another Type of Riding Is English Riding which is ridden in a saddle without a horn as some people say under English there are several different types of English riding
dressage, side saddle, jumping, hunters, fox hunting, hunter paces, equitation, pleasure, trail, Australian stock seat, saddle seat, 3 day eventing, horse trials, etc....
Depending on your preferance is what one would consider normal...
They were both invented for different reasons.
English uses a saddle designed for the rider ot be able to jump and clear fences. It is less comfortable. When you ride english, you tend to have shorter stirrups. The reins are held in both hands with your pinkies on the outside. English disciplines include hunters, jumpers, equitation, and many more. It's just designed to be more showy. The gaits are wlak, trot, canter and gallop.
Westenr uses a large,r more heavy sadle with a horn. It is based on the style of cowboys and other things done on a ranch. You have long stirrups and hold/steer with the reins using one hand. It is more focused on speed and skills of the horse, not really how you look. There is no jumping. Western disciplines include pole bending, barrel raicing, reining and many others. It's gaits are walk, jog (trot), lope (canter), and gallop.
there is no difference but there is technically no such thing as a riding 'Rink'
In American English, that is called "bareback riding," so perhaps "horseback riding" implies the difference between riding with or without a saddle. The first horse races I went to, at a county fair back in the 50s, did not have the jockeys sitting on the horses' backs, but rather in sulkies drawn behind the horses.
Dressage, Show jumping, eventing, cross country, enduance, ring riding, some trail riding, shows (walk trot canter class) and Gymkhana games. Many types of English! You can do English for just about anything really!!Gymkhana is western riding; it includes pole bending, barrel racing, quadrangle stakes, keyhole, and flags. There is also Saddleseat and Side Saddle too!
You can if you are riding English, you can't if you are riding western.
You post in English riding because English riding is a "cleaner" type of riding where Western it is more of a leisurely ride.

No, but it was the original car window sticker-Cowboy player with football tucked under his arm riding a pony. I think they also may have had the Cowboy on horseback on the back of the capes the wore on the bench in the 1960's during cold weather games.
It is released from the gate with a cowboy riding on it.

Cowboys loved a colorful phrase! This is another term for the saddle horn. A cowboy never grabs the lizzy when riding.
When he found the wandering calf, the cowboy said, "Git along, little dogie...". The cowboy is riding a pinto pony. Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys.
