What can or cannot horses eat?

I have grown up around horses and it is the understanding of myself and people i work with that horses can not eat meat as they can not digest it. If a horse eats too much than neccecary, then he/she will get sick. Also if your horse eats too much human food like sweets, or salty things, he/she will get sick.
