I've been asking myself the same question this morning. Yesterday (and several days previously) there was just one small hole with yellowjackets swarming around it, and today there's a larger hole nearby, about 10" in diameter, containing and surrounded by broken layers of nest. At my house, I kind of suspect the large groundhog-looking rodent that lives under the shed, or possibly a stray cat. Seems odd that a cat would go digging for wasps, though.
there are only a few animals that truly have the balls, to dig up a hornet nest. an African honey badger, a bear, a northern flicker, a stupid human, an angry animal... and all of the things that dig it up predatory, learn that their nest contains no honey.
bears, skunks, or raccoons. bears, skunks, or raccoons.
Hey! I Know! That's an "ant hill" out in the yard. It's also called a colony of ants.
Hummingbirds hatch in 2 weeks, and leave the nest in 3weeks.
We have these in our yard. We believe they are either mining bees or sweat bees. Ours have bright green (not metallic green)_ heads, and abdomens that resemble a honey bee or yellow jacket. They live in the ground as specified in the answer, and are not aggressive. Very good pollinators - seen carrying large loads of pollen into burrows. - Larry Hewitt; Centralia, WA
yellow belly lizards are real and one is in my back yard. It has black scales on top. And if it would be rated on fastness it would probally be 5 : 10
Permethrin does kill yellow jackets as well as hornets, ground bees, wasps, and other stinging insects. You can discourage yellow jackets from nesting in trees and shrubbery around your yard by spraying them with permethrin as well.

You could build a bird house. You could put out bird food and a bird bath to make your chances better.Theres probably already a bird nesting in your yard somewhere. They like to nest in dense shrubbery and trees. You might just not be seeing the nest. They usually hide it.
No but they will probably be in your trees.
in you back yard trees or on a eptey pole
Chickadees are cavity nesters, so providing nest boxes will help. Also, feeders with sunflower seed will attract them.
