What do baby chicks eat?

Normally new chicks are given a starter feed which is a finely ground mixture of grains. Chicks often cannot eat the larger sized grains in sufficient quantity for proper nutrition so the mix is ground, moisture added, extruded and dried as a starter/builder feed called a "MASH". This food can come with extra vitamins and medication added when requested.

Ask for chick starter at any feed & grain store.

Baby chicks should eat a commercial chick starter. If they have not been vaccinated for coccidiosis then I would get the medicated feed unless you want your chickens to be organic. All of these options should be availliable at a feed store like C-A-L Ranch or a Co-op.

A trip to the nearest feed store is needed. Check your Yellow Pages for Feed Stores or Farm and Ranch Stores. Some pet stores have things for chicks, also. Phone them first to find out. You will need to buy

* Chick Starter Feed -- start with about 5 pounds, and write the store's name on the bag so you can get the same kind again. Starter feed has anti-biotics which are necessary to prevent disease * Grit for chicks -- get the right size of grit for chicks; bone or oyster shell does not substitute for grit. If they don't have grit (small rocks and gravel) they won't be able to 'chew' their food

If you don't have chick starter feed yet, you can feed them for a day or two on instant oatmeal, flaked infant cereal, or other whole-grain cereals. You can put whole grains (rice, wheat, barley, old-fashioned oats, anything) into the blender and blend them slightly. Do not blend completely to a powder --- the feed should have some "grits" in it.

Leave the feed (and water) with them all the time --- they will stop eating when they have had enough.
