If you have a rooster in your flock, it will defend the hens and itself using spurs, claws, and beak to scare off its attacker. If you only have hens, they will either fight with beak and claws or run for shelter beneath a nearby bush or tree, or flee to the chicken coop.

Both genders react differently. Hens will make one of two choices. They freeze and crouch down or they run, flapping wings and voicing their concern to the rooster if there is one. Roosters immediately go on alert...there is seldom a fear response from a good rooster. They put themselves in harms way to give the hens time to escape. Roosters use wings , feet and spurs to attack and a good solid 8 lb bird can inflict some damage.
