Our chickens like a wide range of foods as well as layers' pellets including: slugs; earthworms; porridge; breakfast cereal; rose leaves; heather; grapes; corn; greens; baked beans; chickpeas and red onion. For treats they get left over curry & rice (no chicken!); roast beef; dried mealworm. The catch flies and have attempted to eat a mouse I caught in the shed.
The wild chickens eat worms, tiny living things, etc. But could try give them grains and seeds.

Chicken left to free range will eat all day but should be supplied with at least 3 oz. of good quality grain feed per day/per bird.

Oh it IS. It is one of the biggest economic sources out there. Major food companies (McDonald's, Burger King, etc...) make a handsome profit off of chicken. I don't know where you got the idea that free range chicken farming isn't economically viable, but just take this from someone who lives in the poultry capital of the WORLD. It is, and probably aways will be, one of the most profitable markets out there.

The egg as such probably isn't much different. But the chicken that laid the free range egg has probably led a happier, more natural Life than a battery chicken.
The Gosselins eat organic as much as possible, so any chicken they eat would be free of stimulants.
If they live outdoors they eat bugs along with chicken feed. If they are raised by a company they are kept in cages and only eat chicken feed. Outdoor (free-range) chickens also eat plants. In the summer, my chickens loved watermelon as a treat, and in the winter, fresh greens (like baby spinach) was their favourite treat.
(This is a way of feeding) - Corn fed means an animal such as chicken being fed on a corn diet. (This is a means of rearing) - Free range means an animal that can wonder relatively freely and eat it's own food.
