Usually the elephant would send an impulse via the nerves to the brain in demand of a response from it's limbs.

The Brain will send back that impulse through the nerves into the muscles, which causes them to contract, thus moving them.

This movement could be considered one of the age old method's of transport within mammals:

Walking.

Or if you want a more detailed explanation, please refer to the 'Jungle Book', an animated film by Disney. The film features a sequence where a line of elephants walk parallel behind one another, holding onto each other's tails, possibly using each other's momentum to walk forward.

This method is also shown in Dumbo.

However Dumbo also features pink elephant's dancing, similar to Winnie the pooh, where a species much theorized to be a branch of the elephant spectrum, the Heffalump, can be seen walking on it's hind-legs and multiplying spontanteously.
