It is the emission of light occurring at a temperature which is below that of the incandescent bodies. Luminescence includes phosphorescence and fluorescence.

I should have added that I only know this through my study of botany. It is seen in both plants and insects. The property of a plant in which this may occurr is of a substance's ability within the plant to transform radiation so as to emit rays of a different wavelength or "color". Certain insects such as a firefly for example can give out light without burning or burning so slowly that heat is not given off from the light.
