∙ 10y agoWhile cats are generally "clean" animals, their spit or "dander" is ripe with bacteria caused by their predatory diet and their claws come in contact with the ground so it's possible for them to pick up other bacteria from there as well. While not venomous, the bacteria count inside a cats mouth is numerous and if gone untreated, can lead to gangrene and in rare but severe cases, can lead to a hand or arm being amputated. (Don't panic though. One scratch will not lead to this unless you don't treat it.)
Rigorous cleaning of the wound--which should include reopening it and squeezing any puss out but may not be necessary--followed by a wash in a strong disinfectant (alcohol, bactine, etc) are recommended for treatment. Use of anti-bacterial creams like Polysporin are also a good idea along with an appropriate sized bandage to remove any lingering infection/puss. Change daily until it comes off clean.
If the swelling becomes extreme (like the size of a bee sting or mosquito bite) or becomes discolored, see your doctor immediately or just go straight to hospital.
