It's teamwork. One lion would never do it alone. It's all in the web, Google this on 'You Tube' and you should come up with a few videos.

A pride of 30 lions takes down a bull elephant with relative ease.

A 20 lion strong pride with say 10 adults is about right for the job, but in this other video 7 female lions bring a female elephant down to its knees but fail to kill it as it wriggles free and runs for its dear life.

Most needful therefore is the participation of at least one grown male lion.

But your question is 'How do they do it?'

First it has to be surronded more or less, that's limiting its chances of escape.

The elephant is attacked on its hind quarters as it tries to escape. If it turns to take a swipe with its trunk the individual cats drop off and run in one direction while another set attacks from the opposite direction still concentrating on the rear parts. Enough trouble is created for the giant until it inevitably trips and falls then a quick frontal attack ensues with one lion taking a choking grip on the trunk while the rest converge on all the softer bits of the great beast. And presto! The big cats have their meal.
