A rat can go stir crazy from being alone, but you can't have 2 male rats cause they might fight. You also can't have 1 male and 1 female cause they might mate and have lots of babies. You don't want that... TRUST ME!!! Also I had 2 ferrets. They were very nice (even though 1 of them bit me... a lot). They are fun to just watch. You could also pick them up and play with them. If you try to do that with a rat... Well, you can't cause rats don't like to be touched by human hands. Ferrets don't care. So if you have to pick a pet between a rat or a ferret. Get a ferret.
ANS2:OK, everything that person said is 100% wrong about rats. All rats should be in at least same sex pairs. I have 5 male rats that live together. 4 brothers who are about 8.5 months old and 1 unrelated male who is 2 years 7 months old. They never fight. Male rats can have the odd squabble (mine do) but its never serious. and rats love being held. They are one of the only pet rodents that actually like being held, they thrive on human attention. Plus, ferrets are more prone to nipping, which can hurt, whereas a rat would never bite unless it is seriously ill or its been abused
