What is a grenal fish?

While a boy growing up in the south east Missouri, I would fish the Varner river. On sveral occassions while believing I had hooked a huge Channel Cat, I would pull up thye devil himself, a Grenal.

A Grenal had a black upper body and grey under belly, it looked like a a "Snake Fish" is what I called it before the term even became known in America. I would take the Grenal down to a place where everyone appreciated something out of the water, a lady named Malma Jay would purchase a Grenal for $1.00 and make Grenal Sausage out of it?

Anyways, I hated to look upon this fish, it was ugly and the image alwasy stuck to me, I remember the biggest one I ever caught, remember it was at the first bend in the river past the old wooden bridge, steep bank, thought I had a cat, was the devil again, haunting my hook.....
