A wisp, common place in European stables in the last century, and taught today as a proper grooming tool by the USPC and professionals is a handmade tool used to slicken the horses coat and remove sweat, dirt and mud. It is fashioned out of hemp rope, straw or hay that has been long cut and twisted into rope. Although not widely used in the United States it has many benefits to removing saddle marks after a work out when bathing is not an option at shows and after rides.

Diagrams to create a wisp can be found in the USPC manuals and in Grooming to Win.
