Best Answer

An airplane flap extends the wing area during take-off and landing, to give extra lift at low speed. This allows the airplane to take-off and land at reasonably low speeds (around 150mph for most jet airliners).

If there is no wind on the moon how does the American flag flap?

There is wind on the Moon. Solar wind but also artificial wind or pressure. If i were to take a wind machine / fan to the moon that flag would flap like crazy. Look at the Apollo 15 EVA, when he walks past the flag after putting it in it is perfectly and then starts to sway like a light breeze hit it. Because he created the wind, just the same as if a car or truck drives past you on the road and you would fel wind or more correctly and change in air pressure. The statement there is no wind on the moon mainly refers to wind caused by weather or atmospheric conditions.

Why does a flag flutter when strong winds are blowing?

When the wind is not blowing strongly, the flow lines in the air are relatively straight. This is called laminar flow. As the wind speed increases, it reaches a threshold beyond which laminar flow is replaced by turbulent flow. In turbulent flow the air is filled with vortices which cause the flag to flap.
