It is often unknown whether, if brought together, they could actually interbreed. As an example, dogs and coyotes were originally allopatric species. However, when humans and their dogs moved into coyote-inhabited areas, it was discovered that dogs and coyotes are capable of interbreeding and producing viable offspring. By now, there are so many dog genes in the coyote population that there may no longer be any such thing as a 100% coyote. for further references see: http://Biology.clc.uc.edu/Courses/bio303/natural%20selection.htm
