Scientists use characteristics such as body structure, cellular organization, mode of nutrition, and method of reproduction to classify living things. These characteristics help differentiate organisms and place them into different taxonomic groups based on their similarities and differences.
The four kingdoms of living things are Animalia (animals), Plantae (plants), Fungi (fungi), and Protista (protists). Each kingdom represents a major group of organisms with distinct characteristics and biological processes.
Cells: Living things are made up of one or more cells. Growth: Living things have the ability to grow and develop. Reproduction: Living things can reproduce and create offspring. Adaptation: Living things can adapt to their environment. Homeostasis: Living things can regulate their internal environment to maintain stability.

According to biologists living organisms are characterized by seven "signs of life": 1) living things have highly organized, complex structures; 2) living things maintain a chemical composition that is quite different from their surroundings; 3) living things have the capacity to take in, transform, and use energy from the environment; 4) living things can respond to stimuli; 5) living things have the capacity to reproduce themselves; 6) living things grow and develop; and 7) living things are well-suited to their environment.

You can determine if something is living or nonliving by these simple things: 1. They have to be able to reproduce, either asexually or sexually. 2. They have to be able to respond to stimuli. 3. They have to have cells, either as a unicellular organism or as a multicellular organism. 4. They have to grow and develop. 5. They have to have homeostasis. This means that they can maintain their own body temperature. Think of this as a thermometer for the body. 6. The last thing is that all living things also have to be able to do is move.
