The well-mannered alligator always tries to walk or swim away from it's 'enemies', but should they feel threatened, or unduly encroached upon, they are known to turn and SNAP with their widely-regarded powerful jaws.
American alligators have many ways to protect themselves. They can use their long, powerful tails to hit predators, they can use their long teeth and powerful jaws to bite and drag predators and prey alike down, they are very fast swimmers so they have a very good chance of getting away from a predator in the water. Alligators also use imtimidation to protect themselves. They will sometimes hiss loudly, almost like a snake, which is a warning to predators. If hissing does not work, alligators will charge at the predator.
