NEVER tie a tight knot when tying a horse. Horses get tangled in their lead ropes often when tied. Many, (if not most) horses will panic. When horses panic, they quickly and easily do great harm to themselves. If the rope is too long, horses will get it caught around their legs or fetlocks and can very quickly get a horrible and painful rope burn that requires daily cleaning and medication and a lot of time to heal. They can easily strangle or hang themselves and die. In fact, many have. That's why you should always tie what is called a quick release knot. Some call it a safety knot, meaning you can very quickly untie the knot if the horse gets into trouble. Trying to explain it here in words is almost impossible. It would be better if you could get someone to show you how to tie a quick release. OR - There are many good diagrams on Google images. if your asking what is the best knot to use when tying up your horse, im going to have to say a safety knot
Tie a loose knot that will give if he spooks or runs You should not tie a loose knot. Actually when tieing your horse you should use a knot..but it is called a safety knot. The way the safety knot works is your horse can't untie himself but the handler can simply free the horse if the situation arised. You should tie a loose knot that will give if he spooks or run or else you could choke the horse.
When tying a horse to the hitching post, you should make a slip-knot. You can find a diagram on how to make a slip-knot by maybe using Google or Bing. You want to make a slip-knot because if something happens when you are interacting with your horse, say if your horse spooks or a car is heading for your horse, you can pull the end of the knot and it will break free so the horse can run away safely and quickly. By using the slip-knot method, you AND your horse will not be in danger of things that you can't move away from quickly because if you tied him up with just a regular old square knot, you would have to have some pretty fast fingers to untie that kind of knot.
Tie a knot where the tail of the rope slips back through theknot's center leaving a loop on the opposite side. If the horse pulls back the knot can be released by pulling the tail of the rope....preventing damage to the horse, rope and whatever the horse was tied to.
Whenever i tie my horses i just wrapp the lead rope around the post because the horse and pull back if spook but won't hurt himself. If you don't trust your horse for that use a slip knott but be constantly watching him so he doesnt hurt himself.

No. You should not tie a knot when your horse is going to be tied to a post. You should always tie a loose not just in case the horse gets spooked or frightened. Never ever tie a tight not. I
A dolly knot
The knot should be tight so the horse can't pull it loose, but make sure the knot is a quick release knot and never leave a tied horse alone, because if he were to panic and no one was there to release him, he could break a halter/lead rope, which would teach him bad habits, or even worse, he could hurt himself.
if you tie a horse up you should always tie a quick release knot never leave a horse unattended when he is tied up
