Neutering is done to males - it involves crushing the Vas Deferens so sperm is no longer able to leave the body. It can be accomplished quickly (seconds) with a vet with the proper tool. Spaying is done to females - it involves tying off the Fallopian tubes so eggs cannot enter the womb. It requires a surgical operations and is therefore a lot more expensive and time comsuming.
Neutering is the removal of an animal's reproductive organs; spaying is the same thing, but the term is generally used on females.
"spay and neuter your pets to control the pet population"-
spaying for female, neutering for male.
Two operations to produce a sterile animal. Spay is for females; neuter is for males. Usually the operation involves cutting either the fallopian tubes (females) or the vas deferenz (male.)
You spay a female dog and cat, you neuter a male dog and cat.
Birds are not mammals, but it should be possible.
It couldn't hurt - you need to talk to the vet about that.
Spaying of a female (usually a pet dog or cat) involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries. Neutering of a male is the removal of the testicles.

I don't know what area you are in but I am in South Florida. You can contact your local humane society and they should be able to give you that information. I used to trap stray (ferile) cats and have them fixed thru a local veterinarian and the humane society actually paid for it to be done most of the time. When they met their maximum for the month then I would usually pay $15 for the males and $25 for the females. I never had a dog fixed thru them. Only cats. My dog was neutered when I bought him and my 2nd dog was already neutered when we rescued him. Definately check w/the Humane Society they can provide a wealth of information as to providing assistance for spaying or neutering. It is the best thing you can do for your animal!!! Best of luck and if you give me your area (city & state), I might be able to find something for you.
