Unlike humans, fish do not have lungs (with the exception of one species, the "lung fish"). Fish are in fact not "ventilating", but breathing. Inside the gills of a fish are rows of red tissue, called filaments. Inside the filaments are many blood capillaries rich with red blood cells which transport oxygen throughout the body. As the fish moves its gills back and forth, it moves water over the filaments and oxygen in the water is absorbed into the blood stream through the filaments. When fish are in water with too little oxygen and cannot get what they need from moving their gills, they will go to the top of the water and gulp air from the surface. If you own a fish and you see it doing this, it would be a good idea to install a water filtration system. Fish will die if the water they are in has too little oxygen.

They also have to vibrate their gills from time to time to release the build-up of sea salt, which can become carcinogenic if allowed to cake hard.

How do you know if a walleye fish is a female or male?

This is very difficult. It's done through "venting." The vent is the opening between the anus and the anal fin where the fish will excrete either eggs or sperm. Usually the vent is larger in females. It raelly just depends on the type. In some cases, if there is an "egg spot" on their anal fin, it means that the fish is male.

Where does the newborn fish come out of a live bearing fish?

The newborn fish is typically born out of the mother fish's cloaca, which is a common opening for reproduction and waste elimination in most fish species. The process is called live birth, where the offspring are born fully formed and able to swim immediately.

Can you boil a fish that lived in a vent deep in the ocean where the water is 700 degrees?

There's no place on the planet with a temperature of 700 degrees. I think he/she is talking about geothermal vents that can be found on the ocean floor and on the edges of islands like Hawaii (and inside my now dead Ford escorts motor, lol). From what I've seen on various nature shows the volcanic vents add warmth and minerals to the surrounding water making it more favorable for sea life to exist there but they don't actually live in the extreme temperatures of the vent itself. Think of it as "sitting near a campfire". There are some forms of microbial life that can exist in extreme temperatures but no fish that science knows of. So anyway, Yes, you can boil the fish as it never really lived in the vent but rather, just close by it.

How do you vent Oscar fish?

To Vent an Oscar you must first remove it from the tank and turn it over onto it's back so it is belly up. You must then examine the Vent. The Vent is the opening between the anus and the anal fin. This is where the male fish release their sperm and the female fish release their eggs. This area is also known as the genital papilla. The female's Vent will be larger than the males to accomadate the passing of the eggs. Unless you have one of the opposite sex for comparrison it will be difficult to determine sex for the unexperienced hobbyist. It will also prove to be more difficult with younger fish rather than more mature fish. For sexually monomorphic fish species (females and males look alike) Venting is the most accurate form of sex determination.
