The giant panda bear is native to China and is found nowhere else in the world. Although a very few zoos outside of China have pandas in their exhibits, the animal is still considered property of the China government and are considered to be on loan. Due to the extreme endangered status of pandas, habitats and breeding programs are closely monitored. Pandas live in the Yangtze Basin where their only food, bamboo, grows in thick forests. Because of their specialized habitats, low birth successes, and human threats, it is estimated only about 1600 still live in the wild.
