Prehistoric horses began in America and moved into Europe and Africa via the Siberian land bridge. However the American horses died out during the Ice Age and there weren't horses in America again until the Europeans arrived.

Spanish Explorers brought the majority of horses with them into the US when they began trying to colonize the land. However Vikings brought Fjord horses with them some 500 years previously into the northern region of the Continent now known as Canada. Whether any of the Fjords migrated downward into the US is unknown however.

∙ 13y agoHorses were brought to the Americas from Spain by the early conquistadors. There had been prehistoric ancestors of the horse in the Western Hemisphere but for some reason they all died out.
There are several breeds that were developed in the USA. The Morgan, American Saddlebred, American Quarter Horse (world's largest breed in numbers), American Paint Horse, Tennesee Walker, Appaloosa, Cleveland Bays, Standardbred, POA (pony-sized Appaloosa) are some of the most popular. Almost all modern breeds can trace bloodlines back to the Arabian.
