There are several ways to spell the sound a frog makes. The most common spelling is 'ribbit.' Sometimes, when referring to the sound a bull frog makes, the word 'croak' is used to refer to the deep, throaty, cracked groan bullfrogs make.
There is only one frog in the world which makes the Ribbit sound - that's the Pacific Tree Frog, a tiny North American frog which grows to a max of 2" long. The sound it makes was adopted by Hollywood/Disney - hence the popularity and misconception.
They make either long, burst, or short noises varying in pitch. People often refer to it as a "croak" or "chirp." I have even heard someone calling it "jug-o-rum." The sound they make is their mating call.
