The behavior you describe does not make me think that you dog wants to eat your kitten. Typically if a dog is going to kill a cat and they get that close it would be a done deal. They don't usually mess around with licking.
My dog does that with his stuffed squirrel when he wants to go outside and bury it.
It's not because they're hurt, a good percentage of the time, but actaully expressing other emotions. Dogs have various reasons as to why they whine. They may whine to express: 1. Anxiety 2.Pain 3. For attention 4. In excitement (such as chasing squirrels and rabbits).
Not normally. When they are eaten, they can't do much.
Dogs whine for a lot of reasons. This could be one of them. Dogs can tell by the smell when another dog is in estrus, so an intact male dog might very well whine to get out to visit a nearby female in heat. A neutered male probably won't care much.
Some dogs will walk around with a bone in its mouth and whine when they are looking for a safe place to bury the bone. Other dogs may want you to play fetch with them and the bone.
my sister is whining because she couldn't have her toy
Wolfs whine because, they might be hungery or they might be a baby wolf that wants food.
Dogs whine for many reasons. They're hungry, thirsty, or lonesome. It's there way of telling you what they want.
My dog does that with his stuffed squirrel when he wants to go outside and bury it.
