Dairy cattle are Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Normande, Canadienne and Milking Shorthorn. The largest dairy breed in number of cows is the Holstein (black and white).

Beef cattle include Hereford, Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Chianina, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Salers, Shorthorn, Simmental, Brahman, Piedmontese, Pinzgauer, Belgian Blue, Aubrac, Romagnola, Texas Longhorn, English Longhorn, Florida Cracker/Pineywoods, Galloway, Belted Galloway, Scottish Highland and Marchigiana. Largest beef breed in number of cattle is Angus (black cattle).

There are of course cross breeds in both varieties, including: Murray Grey, Chiangus, Brangus, Red Brangus, Beefmaster, Droughtmaster, Santa Cruz, Senepol, Santa Gertrudis, Barzona, Ranger, American, Beefalo, RX3, Bonsmara, Braford, Simbrah, Bramousin, and Bralers, as well as other commercial cattle that are crossed for their ability to produce calves with hybrid vigour/heterosis.

Dual purpose breeds include: South Devon, Devon, Dexter, Kerry, Red Poll, Randall, Dutch Belted, etc.

There are five general classification: beef, dairy, dual, sport and draft animals with numerous breeds in each classification.
