Most of the film took place in Medical labs, test facilities, etc, where pets are generally not allowed. The Title derives from the Flat line-no measurable heart or brain activity- a dead horizontal line- that is the starting point for the ( Near death experience) that is the basic plot device of the film. In real life anybody who would conduct such experiments in a University hospital ( it was set in Chicago) would not only be bounced out from the hospital- but probably be incarcerated. It dealt in a beat around way with Suspended animation, a more gadget-laden process that was NOT in Flatliners. stand clear Anthony Flask, pardner.
