It sounds like you have found a redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) which is native to Australia. Redback spiders are venomous, and the females can be recognized by their distinctive red stripe on the upper side of their abdomen. I believe you are referring to a Wolf spider, i just encountered such and immediately started to look it up. This description is the only thing that i could find. Silvery back can occur it was non-aggressive unlike a brown recluse in other words. A small amount larger than a Half-dollar.
They have a black line through their body and the top half is light brown and the bottom half is creamy.
