As recommended by my vet, Benadryl is one of the safest over the counter medicines to give for sedation but it must be used according to the directions. For adult dogs you would use the same dosage as is listed for adults and puppies would use the dosage recommended for children. However, it is always best to ask your vet if it's OK to give your pet anything that's OTC or anything that you have never used on you rpet before.

Is there anything you can use to sedate a cat other than getting an expensive prescription from the vet?

== == * You can not give your cat any type of over the counter or prescription medication. This is toxic and will kill your feline. Only a licensed Vet can prescribe and administer any type of medication, to your feline. If the Sedation you are speaking of is a (local or general) this is administered by a Veterinarian usually for and during Surgery. A series of blood tests are performed on your feline by a veterinarian prior to administering this type of medication, to rule out such things as kidney problems etc. To ensure your feline is well enough to withstand the Local or general, during the surgery.* If one is talking about sedation used for travel, most veterinarians will not recommend it. However, this has to be perscribe to you by a Licensed Veterinarian. == == * Benedryl. You can look it up on the internet, Google it, or talk to your local vet. However it's more a relaxant than a sedation method. * Sometimes when I'm at my vets (they often use the same drugs humans do in smaller doses) I will have her write me out a prescription and have it filled by my pharmacist as it's cheaper. I only use this method if the medication is extremely expensive. If you can afford to pay the vets then please do so. * If he cat is long haired and its hair is all matted, it won't let you touch it because it is painful. Pet groomers refuse to do the job because the cat scratches. The only solution is to have a vet sedate the cat and groom him. This is an awfully expensive grooming. So anything that can safely sedate the cat for about 20minutes.
