Because they are storing energy. Imagine a spring. It cannot "spring" very far unless compressed, because when it is compressed the amount of potential energy the spring contains is greatly increased. When you let the spring go, the potential energy converts to kinetic energy and you can't find where the spring went. Same principle for snakes that coil before they strike. The more they coil, the faster and farther they can strike at prey or predator.

This asked WHAT snakes coil ... not WHY do snakes coil ... this does not answer the question.

Does a snake have coils?

Yes. All snakes wrap around an object. But if it's a poisons snake it probably will not wrap around someone/something to kill it, it will bite its prey. But if it is not poisons it will wrap around something/someone to kill it.

How does a snake capture its food and eat it?

Well Somtimes It Depends On What Kind On Snake. Some Snakes Can Camoflogse And Wait For There Prey To Come By Then When It Close To It The Snake Springs Out In Front Of It And Usally The Prey Has No Where To Run So..It Gets Atten. Some Snakes.Hide InBushes Or Somthing Then When The Prey Is Close By The Snake Jumps Out.Wraps Its Self Around The Prey.Chokes The Prey. Then When The Prey Dies The Snake Eats It.Some Snakes Live In Water Then When A Fish Comes By It Jumps Out And Eats The Fish. And Some Snakes Hide Then When Its Prey Is Close By Then The Snake Jumps Out And Bites The Prey.(Putting Posin Into The Prey). Then The Snake Goes And Hides Again And Waits Till The Prey Dyes Then The Snake Eats It.

Can a king snake kill a rattlesnake?

King snakes are essentially constrictors, which kill their prey by suffocating them. The modus operandi of a king snake is to first bite the victim ( a rattle snake) and then rapidly throw coils around the anterior body of the rattle snake, tightening them continuously so that the rattle snake is not able to breathe. The king snake maintains this tight coil until the rattler is dead. It then releass the coil, uses its forked tongue (and Jacobson's organ) to find the rattler's head and proceeds to swallow the prey. During this process, even if the king snake is bitten by the rattler, it does not matter as the king snake is immune to the venom of its prey.

What is the difference in the way a scarlet king snake and a coral snake and a coral snake subdue their prey?

Like other kingsnakes, the scarlet kingsnake is nonvenomous and is primarily a constrictor. It subdues it prey by wrapping around it ind squeezing, preventing the prey from breathing and restricting oxygen flow to the brain. The coral snake, by contrast, is highly venomous. It bites its prey and injects a powerful neurotoxin that causes paralysis and eventually stops the heart and lungs.

When you breathe in does a constrictor constrict?

Nope - it's the opposite. When a constricting snake catches its prey, it coils tightly around the prey's body. As the victim breathes out, the snake tightens its coils so the animal has difficulty breathing in. This process is repeated a number of times until the prey simply can no longer draw breath, and it suffocates.

What is constrictors?

a constrictor is a type of snake that coils around its prey, squeezing and suffocating it, such as a boa constrictor or green anaconda.

Both frogs and snakes are predators. Though you are more likely to find a snake that prey on frogs than the other way around.

What snake in south America hugs its prey?

The boa constrictor is a snake in South America that "hugs" its prey—more accurately, it constricts it. After striking and grabbing the prey with its teeth, it coils its muscular body around the animal and squeezes, tightening each time the prey exhales. This constriction cuts off blood flow and breathing, leading to death. Another notable constrictor in South America is the green anaconda, one of the largest snakes in the world. It uses the same method of killing, often targeting larger prey due to its immense size.
